West End Choose & Cut
The place to go to cut your own Christmas tree.
these guys are great.... there is a fire pit to warm by and roast marshmallows.
They are in Beaver Creek, NC ( West Jefferson - Ashe county)
This tree farm is on the land where I played, hiked and camped as a kid.
There are sooooooooo many memories for me when we go there.
My grandmother and her brothers and sisters grew up next to this land and had their dairy cows here. When I was a kid there were always beef cattle roaming here. I'll try to find some pic's of me and my brothers as kids on this land.

Well... It's Back to the hospital for me.

I'm going to the hospital on Saturday to have another lumbar puncture ( spinal tap ) done.
Hopefully this one will be MUCH better than the last one.
My new neurologist seems to think that if my pressure is still high the best course of action is to do several daily lumbar punctures over a week or two.
OUCH!!!!!

All this started around the 15th of June and I'm still VERY sick. It just seems like I'll never get well.
Now I have Intracranial hypertension or Pseudotumor Cerebri
as well as Papilledema

Pseudotumor Cerebri Symptoms
The common symptoms are headache, dizziness and impaired vision.Headache is often worse on awakening, and can be intensified by coughing, laughing, bending over, crying, and increased physical activity.Impaired vision shows up in several ways. It can be visual blurring, brief moments of dimming or loss of vision called transient visual obscurations (TVO's), small specks appearing or vision distortions (items moving up or down).Blindness can occur.
Other symptoms affecting PTC patients include: shoulder/arm pain, neck pain, memory problems, awkward coordination, muscle weakness, fatigue, back pain, and depression.Possible symptoms include dizziness, hearing loss, ringing in the ears or noises within the head called tinnitus.
Regarding headaches: a study showed 92% of patients interviewed had headaches; 93% of those with headaches said it was the most severe headache they had ever experienced. The head pain was described as a pulsing headache that kept increasing in intensity. Another description was a "pressure" headache, resembling a percolator. Seventy four percent of those with headaches had it on a daily basis. Can also experience neck stiffness or nausea.

I'm trying to keep working but it's tough with all this and it seems like the summer will be gone by the time I get back to getting out with my camera.
OK.... Enough whining for one day.

Teresa has been gone six years now, wow that's hard to believe. It seems like a complete different life time ago..... In one way just yesterday and in another an eternity. It's the same with me and Debbie, it just seems like we've always been together then on the other hand like yesterday when we met. I'm not doing anything special today ( too sick) I just got out of the hospital for the 3rd time in two weeks. Too long of a story for me to type but I had viral meningitis along with unknown stroke symptoms. It's been a very long three weeks and still not a lot better.
Any way, maybe I'll get back to posting some pictures on here soon.

Yup...that's right...I'm addicted to food, or at least addicted to eating. I've gained WAY too much weight and am in the worst shape, physically, I've ever been in. So... It's time to get serious and do something about it. I went kicking and screaming ( more link whining and crying) with Debbie on Saturday to weight watchers. While sitting there I realized I was acting like a two year old whining about eating green beans or going to bed. Any way I decided to go ahead and join and give it my all, to support Debbie and to give her the best me I can give her. She's lost one husband and she certainly don't need to loose me to shear stupidity. SO.... Along with the Weight Watchers program I'll try ( yes try ) to post my progress or the lack there of here as just another way to keep me motivated.

Today ( as "they" say ) is the first day of the rest of my life.

Starting out at 237.6 pounds and hopefully counting down. We don't have a scale at home so I will post my weekly weigh in's here on Saturday of each week.

I've got a Family photo shoot to do in Old Salem in a couple weeks so Debbie and I spent the afternoon there looking over some good spots for posing and checking the lighting at that time of day. We did some sightseeing and shopping while we were there. WoW! What a beautiful day for the first of December. 69(f) degrees and sunny. It just seems like no matter what or when we plan a day or weekend out we have the most perfect days. Even our wedding day in February, in the Great Smokey Mountains, was sunny and very warm. Any way here's a few pic's from our day back in the 1700's town of Salem, NC.

Howard, Georgia Gentry

HOWARD Mrs. Georgia Gentry Howard, 88, of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, May 20, 2007, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Oct. 6, 1918, in Ashe County to Frank Austin and Alice Louellen Vickers Gentry. Mrs. Howard was a member of Rosemont Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. John Allen Howard; a daughter, Shirley Park; three brothers; and a sister. Surviving are a grandson, Bradley Park; and a son-in-law, Jim Park, both of Cherokee; a brother, Bill Gentry; and a sister, Margie Lambert, both of Danville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with the Rev. Mark Reed officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27407, or Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Just a quick note before I run out the door to work to start my 3rd week on the new job. Weeks 1 and 2 went pretty well, lots of hard work but at least I should be able to loose some of this extra weight. I am enjoying the work, something new every day and always something interesting at every job site.

Today's the day, Friday the 13th of April 2007, my last day at work with Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
Come Monday morning, Lord willing, I'll be starting a new career in the pest control business.
I'm excited about the change and really looking forward to it but sad about leaving behind 15 years of employment here at the same time. I have no doubt that the Lord is leading me in this direction so I am at ease about it all but that fear of the un-known is lingering right on the surface. Any way, I'm not sure how much I'll be posting here at least until I get settled in my new job so wish me luck and say a prayer for me as I go through this transition. I'll be back when I can and post updates from time to time and post more photo's as I get time.

A new week and a new fresh start.

My dad is doing much better, recovering at home now.

I now have a new job, my last day here will be on April 13th ( Yes Friday the 13th )
I start my new job at a local pest control company as a commercial/residential pest control technician. I'm really looking forward to the change but nervous about making a change at the same time.

More updates later and hopefully some new photo's eventually.

I can't believe it's already March and I've only had a handful of posts on here all year. Life is still pounding us down at every turn but thanks to our faith in God and the strength he gives us we are holding our heads up and trudging on.

After handling the details of two deaths in the family in February and trying to get settled back down a bit we get hit yet again.... My dad fell on the basement steps and went backward down the stairs hitting his head full force on the block wall at the bottom. No one was home but Mike ( my brother ) decided to stop by for a minute on his way home and found him lying at the bottom of the steps. The took him by ambulance to Forsyth hospital where they examined him them immediately said "we can't treat him here, he needs a trauma center." so they transfered him to Baptist Hospital ( where I work ) Any way he broke his neck in two places and had lost the use of his left arm as well as a huge gash on top of his head and several smaller cuts and bruises. Friday morning they were going to move him to a traction bed to help relieve the pressure on his spinal cord until the surgeon could get to him ( he had an aneurysm surgery to do first ) but when they started to move him his legs started to go numb so they stopped and took him straight to surgery. So far he seems to be recovering pretty well and will start therapy today. He is up and walking ( with help) and can move his left arm a little bit.

My Great Aunt is also in the hospital ( at Forsyth ) due to hear weakening heart and dementia. We are trying to get her into an assisted living facility because she now needs 24 hour care and my mom's not going to be able to give her the attention she has been giving her.

Well I guess this is my first real post of the year. I stopped by on the 5th to post those Christmmas pic.'s but haven't been around much since.
It's been a rough year already with sickness, things braking down at both houses, more sickness, weddings, Kristy moving out and much more. I just hope it's all hitting early to get out of the way so we can have a good year.
I started working on another blog but haven't gotten it off the ground yet. Keeping them both up is going to be hard to do while life goes on around me so I may give up one or the other of them. The new blog is a local blog for The YC ( Yadkin county ) and whatever I find happening in and around the county. You can check it out at ycblogger.blogspot.com
In the mean time I will post to both blogs until I decide where to go with each of them.

Fifth Firefighter Dead in Esperanza Fire
The family of 23-year-old Pablo Cerdagrieves their son's death

That blaze destroyed 54 buildings -- including homes -- and charred more than 40,000 acres. But the loss of five firefighters has impacted the fire community the most.

"In the hearts of the Forest Service and all the fire service community, Pablo will truly be honored at this Sunday's memorial service for the brave ... all five brave firefighters who lost their lives on the Esperanza Fire," says U.S. Forest Service supervisor Jeane Wade-Evans.

Flags will continue to fly half-staff at all U.S. Forest Service stations until all five firefighters are buried.

I hate to say it but I guess it's true, Fall is here. Not to stay though, that's the problem, it only signals the coming of winter.

This Ghostly photo was taken at an old graveyard on the side of Shallowford rd. in Forsyth county. Most of the graves were from the 1700's to the early 1800's. This was part of a trail that was used by Daniel Boone and other pioneers on their way westward. It was one of a few shallow fords across the Yadkin river safe enough for the wagon trains.

It was on the 17th day of October 2004 when Sir Jerry Proposed marriage to Lady Debra at George Vanderbilt's Estate in Asheville, NC.

Lucky for Sir Jerry Lady Debra said yes without so much as a thought.

They rode off into the sunset to marry in the mountians the very next Febuary and to live out there lives in the McFadyen castle Lochbuie where they lived happily ever after.

Back from our family vacation at Myrtle Beach. I'll have some photo's to post in a day or two, when I get a chance to go though them ALL.

We had a GREAT trip. Debbie's family gets together once a year for a Family vacation. There were 13 of us all together in one house. We didn't do a whole lot, just made it a relaxing family time kind of trip. I did get in some surf fishing at night and made it to the Ripley's® Aquarium for the first time. That was a GREAT experience.
I'm not so excited about being back at work today but glad to be home none the less. I know every family can't get along long enough for a trip like this but if you can DO IT! It is wonderful to have time like that to spend with your family and really get to know each other better than just seeing each other on holidays.

As a friend said yesterday " I've just spent a weekend in heaven but had to come back today!"
We spent nearly the entire weekend in church, Friday through Sunday. I know, I know that's not what most people would think of as a good weekend and I would normally say the same thing. Our church went through the second in a series of weekends on a spiritual Journey called Lay Renewal. I'll just quote the self description from the NAMB website....

When we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior, we begin our Spiritual Journey and many different people, events and experiences in our lives causes us to grow on that journey. Most of the time progress on our Spiritual Journey cannot be measured by time or by our age. Our relationship with our Lord grows in both the mountain top highs when we celebrate and praise Him, as well as when we are in the low valley and desperately need and call on Him.

A visiting team of Christians from other churches come and participates with the church during the weekend, leading in praise songs and testimonies about where they are on their Journey. They are not "Super Christians," just ones that are aware of their journey and are willing to testify about what the Lord is doing in their life at the present time.

The weekend begins at the church on Friday night with a church-wide meal then a General session in the Sanctuary. There are meetings in the church members homes on Saturday morning and separate Men and Ladies luncheon meeting. Free time after lunch until Saturday evening when the church regroups for another meal and general session and special family prayer time. Part of the Sunday School time in used for testimonies from home church members about what the weekend has meant to them and a special Sunday Worship Service completes the visiting team member’s part of the weekend. The Highlight of the weekend is the Evaluation Service Sunday night, when the church as a body evaluates what the Holy Spirit has been saying to them during the Weekend.

The experience was nothing short of incredible. I feel lifted up.... filled up maybe even overflowing. I can't really explain it all and it's going to take some time to process it all but I am very, very thankful to my God for leading me to this place in my life.
I feel renewed to get back to encouraging others as I've done so much in the past. I feel like a part of what I am meant to do in this life is to use the pain I've experienced to some how lift others up and encourage them to get through the pain in their own lives and this weekend has brought me back to the place where I can again do that.

I know.... I am late in getting started but Debbie and I are walking again this year in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)Walk for a cure.

I just can't sit back and do nothing after loosing Teresa to this horrible disease. It's not much but when combined with the rest of the country this money does a lot of good toward finding a cure. Debbie was also diagnosed with diabetes a few months after we were married and there is still a good chance of Kristy developing it at some point in her life.

Well, it looks like we pretty much dodged the bullet in this part of NC. Lots of rain and wind with some trees and power lines down but nothing major. A couple of the area schools are closed because of power failure but other than that it's business as usual.
forecast for today...

Rain likely this morning...then a chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. Breezy with highs in the lower 70s. Northwest winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

It's 62 degrees here right now.... let's see... 8:15 am... what a welcome change after all those hot muggy days.

Lazy Days of Summer

The Lazy days of summer are going away fast. Today's Kristy's first day of college. That's hard to beleive. I remember her first day of school, I was at work and Teresa called crying her eyes out. She said that she just sat by the side of the road crying, with Spike our Husky, after kristy road off on that bus toward Whitaker Elementary School.

This is a photo that Debbie took near Boone, NC last year. It makes me think of the lazy summer days I spent in West Jefferson as a kid.

My first day back from vacation. As you may have noticed this post didn't start with any photo's, well guess who forgot his camera.
We did buy some photo's of us on our white water rafting trip and if I don't forget the disk again I'll try to post those in a day or two.
We had a great family vacation, camping at Lake James State park, a day in Asheville, a day of white water rafting on the French Broad River, then off to Paramount Carowinds theam park on Monday. Then a couple days spent in a wonderful dentist chair and ended it all up yesterday with a day on a ski boat on Belews lake.

Where'd the weekend go?

Not much to say this mornin' ... ... Need more coffee!

I feel like I've had no sleep at all (thank you Kristy), it's supposed to be in the mid to upper 90's today with very high humidity and my co-worker called in sick. Happy Monday to me. ;)
